Therapeutic Massage for the Older Adult
In Home or On Site
I am certified in geriatric massage, a technique specifically designed for older adults. I work with anyone medically able to receive massage, particularly people with dementia, in assisted-living facilities, or confined to wheel chairs or hospital beds. It is non-intrusive. The person does not have to undress or move from their location. This special massage improves circulation, enhances relaxation, and helps reduce stiffness and the aches and pains of the day. For people in nursing homes, it helps break the routine with a pleasant neck, back, or foot massage. I am associated with retirement communities and assisted-living facilities where I give massages on a regular basis to their residents.
Education/Training
I am certified by the Day-Break Institute, the developers of geriatric massage. I have a MA in Psychology and am nationally certified as a massage therapist, licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC. I am associated with several retirement communities and assisted-living facilities where I give massages on a regular basis to their residents.
Bio
As a senior, 70+, I learned that playing on the floor with my grandkids was fun, but getting back up wasn't. So I studied the issues of aging and its affects upon our bodies and some of the techniques that could make the process easier to live with. Since massage has always been a part of my life, I decided to apply its principles to the problems associated with getting older. In working with many of the elderly in assisted-living facilities, I realized that the music they listened to and the trivia questions they enjoyed, were also part of my upbringing and within my frame of reference. This has made it possible to have conversations with them about mutual interests. The key to a successful geriatric massage is enhanced by the relationship that is established with the client.
I have been a Director of Education and instructor for a massage school.
