Bio
Often as Therapists we get asked "What led you to become a Massage Therapist?" For me that is a story I like to tell. While working as a Baggage Agent for TSA I got injured on the job. I was offered the treatment option of surgery. This however was not an option I wanted to choose. So I did my research and found alternative therapy options. It took awhile to convince my Workers Comp Office to allow me to take charge of my treatments but I guess that after my bombarding the fax machine daily with statistics and articles of other options they gave in.
With a diagnosis of herniated discs in L5 and S1 I sought out Chiropractic Care. My choice was Spinal Decompression Therapy. This was, and still is considered experimental and not usually covered by Insurance Companies. Persistence pays and I went thru several months of treatments that involved decompression sessions combined with adjustments and physical therapy.
Happily for me it worked and after treatments I returned to my job and promptly quit.During my time out of work while being treated I was able to do some soul searching and decided to pursue what I'd always thought of as a "hobby". The pursuit of Massage as a Career did not come easy. For those who do not know what it entails to get a License to be a Therapist I will fill you in.
The Programs in Florida Average 750 classroom hours. The Program involves a lot of Anatomy and Physiology. All name of bones are learned as is names of all major muscle groups.The systems of the Body are taught (respiratory,circulatory and functions of all internal organs) add to that a healthy dose of human based biology . The Origin and History of Massage is covered as is Eastern Medicine commonly referred to as integrated medicine or Chinese Medicine. During this time students participate in "hands on learning" thru Public Clinics in which they work on many "clients" under the supervision of Instructors.
I strive to teach the general public that massage is not just "fluff and buff stuff" or just for women but a valued skill set that when combined with medical care can have wonderful results.
After pursuing several other exciting and enjoyable Career Paths (Graphic Arts , Marketing and Sales,Veterinary Nursing and Flight Attendant - just to name a few...) I finally found "my calling" and what I wanted to be involved in for the rest of my life ! I look forward to continuing my education and advancing my skillset in an ever evolving field.
